Description
A large brown pelican is captured in flight with its wings fully extended as it glides in for a landing on the crowded fishing pier at Fort Pickens on the west end of Florida's Santa Rosa Island. The background is blurred, emphasizing the bird's movement against a soft sky and distant landscape across the Pensacola Harbor. This image is a crop of a larger image, digitally edited to remove people in the frame and other visual distractions so that full focus is on this magnificent bird.

It almost seems impossible that this big bird could land safely and yet I think of the big cargo planes landing. I am not an aeronautical engineer but I can not help but see the tucked bill, the extended wings with stabilizing air flow through the raised feathers or whatever is happening! It is a beautiful capture! LF

Thanks Karen! Just a moment later the bird dropped like a stone and kind of skidded to a stop on the pier’s decking among all the people and fishing paraphernalia. It was definitely one of “those” experiences! ;)
